Description

“Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees is one of the most iconic disco songs of all time and one of the defining tracks of the Saturday Night Fever era. Released in December 1977 as the second single from the Saturday Night Fever motion picture soundtrack, the song was issued by RSO Records. It was written by Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, and Maurice Gibb, and produced by the Bee Gees, Albhy Galuten, and Karl Richardson.

Musically, “Stayin’ Alive” is a classic disco track built around a tight groove, a pulsing rhythm, a sharp guitar hook, falsetto vocals, bass, electric piano, string synthesizer, percussion, horns, and a distinctive drum loop. The song was recorded in 1977 at Château d’Hérouville in France and Criteria Studios in Miami.

The main recording personnel includes Barry Gibb on lead vocals, harmony vocals, rhythm guitar, and acoustic guitar, Robin Gibb on harmony and background vocals, and Maurice Gibb on harmony vocals, background vocals, and bass guitar. The track also features Alan Kendall on lead guitar, Blue Weaver on electric piano and string synthesizer, Joe Lala on percussion, and a drum loop credited humorously to “Bernard Lupe,” a fictional name connected to drummer Dennis Bryon.

Lyrically, “Stayin’ Alive” is more serious than its dancefloor reputation might suggest. Robin Gibb described the song as being about survival in the streets of New York, while Barry Gibb connected it to the universal struggle of fighting through difficult circumstances and staying alive despite pressure, frustration, and obstacles.

One of the biggest curiosities about the song is its famous drum loop. During the recording sessions, Bee Gees drummer Dennis Bryon had to leave after his mother died. After trying a drum machine without success, the producers took two bars from the already-recorded drum track of “Night Fever,” turned them into a repeating tape loop, and used that as the rhythmic foundation for “Stayin’ Alive.”

Another funny detail is the invented drummer credit “Bernard Lupe.” The name was a joke based on session drummer Bernard Purdie, but the credit became so believable that “Bernard Lupe” was supposedly sought after as a drummer until people discovered he did not actually exist.

The title also has an interesting story. RSO Records wanted the song to match the film’s original working title, “Saturday Night,” but the Bee Gees refused because they felt there were already too many songs with that title. Instead of changing the song, Robert Stigwood eventually changed the movie title to Saturday Night Fever, connecting it to another Bee Gees song, “Night Fever.”

“Stayin’ Alive” became a huge commercial success. It reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in February 1978 and stayed there for four consecutive weeks. It also reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart and topped charts in countries including Australia, Canada, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and South Africa.
The song also became part of Grammy history. At the 21st Annual Grammy Awards, “Stayin’ Alive” won Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices, while the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack also received major recognition, including Album of the Year.

The music video was not directly based on the plot of Saturday Night Fever. It was filmed on the MGM Studios backlot in Culver City, California, while the Bee Gees were also filming Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The video used old Hollywood sets, including locations associated with films such as The Three Musketeers, Young Frankenstein, and The Band Wagon.

Another major curiosity is the song’s later use in CPR training. Because “Stayin’ Alive” has a tempo of around 103 beats per minute, it aligns with the recommended 100–120 chest compressions per minute used in CPR. The song has been used in medical education campaigns and famously appeared in pop culture references related to CPR, including The Office.

“Stayin’ Alive” has remained one of the most celebrated dance songs in popular music. It was ranked No. 9 on AFI’s list of top songs in American cinema, placed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and was named No. 1 on Rolling Stone’s list of the best disco songs of all time.

Lyrics

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm
I've been kicked around since I was born
And now it's all right, it's okay
You may look the other way
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive

Oh, when you walk

Well, now I get low and I get high
And when I can't get either, I really try
Got the wings of heaven on my shoes
I'm a dancin' man and I just can't lose
You know, it's all right, it's okay
I'll live to see another day
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive, stayin' alive (ooh)
Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive
(Aaah)

Life's goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah
Life's goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm
I've been kicked around since I was born
And now it's all right, it's okay
You may look the other way
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ah, ah, ah, stayin' alive
(Ooh)

Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (aah, aah, aah)
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me, yeah
I'm stayin' alive
Life goin' nowhere, somebody help me
Somebody help me, yeah (aah, aah, aah)
